Today, I’m excited to share a very special addition to our garden—a symbol of resilience and beauty—the Peggy Martin rose, also referred to as the “Katrina rose.”
The captivating story of this rose begins with Peggy Martin, a Louisiana gardener whose family has deep roots in the region. In the devastating wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Peggy's garden was submerged under floodwaters, along with much of her community. Amid the wreckage, one rose bush miraculously survived, resilient against the storm’s fury. This tenacious climber, now known as the Peggy Martin rose, has since become a symbol of hope and strength, enduring the harshest conditions and thriving amidst adversity.
Inspired by its story, we decided to plant our very own Peggy Martin rose right here in our backyard, allowing its southern beauty to take over our pergola. My husband, Julian, our son Samuel, and I planted it together. I hope that planting something in our garden every year becomes an annual tradition for Earth Day. This way, we can teach and promote the importance of caring for and admiring our planet Earth to our little one.
The Peggy Martin rose serves not only as a breathtaking feature in our garden but also as a living testament to the strength of the human spirit and the enduring beauty that can emerge from even the darkest of times. Each bloom is a reminder that we, too, can overcome challenges and flourish.
We look forward to watching our roses grow, weaving its story of survival and beauty through the trellis of our pergola. And we hope that each year, as we nurture this rose, it reinforces the lessons of resilience and hope within our family.
Planting Tips:
- Location: Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil.
- Planting: Early spring or late fall is the best time for planting to allow the rose to establish itself before the extreme weather of summer or winter.
Guiding Your Rose to Success: To ensure your Peggy Martin rose reaches its full potential, supporting its growth is key. We use eco-friendly gardening tape that gently supports the plant without damaging its stems. Caring for Your Climbing Rose:
